Coming
Of Age:
The
history of Quinceañera dates back
to the ancient Aztecs. The word "Quinceañera"
is derived from two root words: "quince"
meaning fifteen, and "añera"
which is a form of "años"
meaning "year"; together referring
to a young ladies' fifteenth birthday.
At the age of fifteen, Aztec males were
expected to prepare to become warriors,
while girls were formally presented to
their community as young ladies ... a
grand "coming of age"
ritual and celebration. The Quinceañera
begins with a Thanksgiving Mass (Misa
de Acción de Grácias). Traditionally,
the young Quince girl is accompanied by
a head chamberlain (chambelan), other
chamberlains, maids of honor (damas),
her godparents (padrinos)
and her mother and father. The Thanksgiving
Mass is a ceremony where the baptismal
vows made by her parents are reaffirmed.
Music plays a very important role in the
Quinceañera and in Spanish and
Latino culture generally. One of the most
beautiful traditions in the history of
the Quinceañera is the father/daughter
dance, where the father takes his daughter's
hand and invites her to share a waltz
with him as everyone looks on. This symbolizes
his recognition that she is now a lady
and should be treated as such.
Another tradition has the young girl wearing
flat shoes at first before she is presented
with a pair of elegant, heeled shoes to
signify her more grown-up status. The
quince girl may also present her younger
sister with a porcelain doll to symbolize
the release of the last of
her toys ... another representation of
moving forward to adulthood. The Quince
girl is presented with many gifts herself...
among them is a bracelet or a ring that
represents the unending circle of life. |

Tips |
| •If
you're looking for a quinceanera guide,
there are several sites that have them
already. The best one so far is perhaps
from quinceanera-boutique The following tips are bases on observations
at past quinceaneras. If you'd like to
add your own experience feel free to tell
us. These days people often give gift
cards instead of gifts. Usually there's
a table set up for the gifts that the
guests bring to the party, but when they
are bringing cards it can sometimes get
a little confusing where to put them.
An easy way is to have a box set up for
this purpose. You can wrap it up in the
same colors as your theme colors. One
very important thing to keep in mind is
that these cards are money, so your box
should be locked or sealed an it should
be deep enough with only a small slit
to put the cards in but make it difficult
to take them out. When you're 15th is
over then you can cut or open the box
to get everything out.
A
good way to keep track of all your planning
as you do your shopping around is to
get a binder and divided in catergories
such as halls, dresses, cakes etc. Get
plastic holders to put anything you
print out from the internet or any cards
and flyers. Most quinceañeras
have a caterer that provides the food,
but if your 15th is not going to be
too big, or you're on a budget, another
idea is
to have take out such as chinese or
mexican food . Then you can just set
it out the trays on a table and everyone
serves themselves. |
